Women’s Clothing Brands Need To Get It Together

Hi friends! I hope you’re having a good week so far. Today’s post is a little different. While I was at Target on Sunday, I decided to try on some new jeans. My pants have been loose for a while and I’ve just been a little lazy with getting new ones when tightening my belt has been enough. This post is going to have some real talk in it so just keep that in mind.

Now a few weeks ago, I placed an order at Macy’s and grabbed a pair of my beloved Levi’s in one size smaller. When I say I couldn’t even pull them up over my thighs, I’m not kidding. Now I was annoyed because it left me feeling like I was just going to be stuck in between sizes for a while even though I could tell I would need smaller pants soon.

While at Target the other day, I decided to try on jeans again. I figured maybe it was just the style that didn’t work with my body. So I grabbed a size 6 skinny jeans and headed to the dressing room. They were big. Not just a little big but “a belt would help big”, they were “they looked huge on me” big. So I grabbed one size smaller. Still big. I was in disbelief at that point. Yes I’ve lost weight but there was no way I would fit in a size 2. To be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever been a size 2. Yet they fit.

When I got home, I told Alex because it was just ridiculous that a 28 in one brand wouldn’t go over my thighs but a size 2 in another fit perfectly. It got me thinking that maybe it was the same with men’s clothing to. So I asked Alex if his sizing changed based on the brand. He informed me that nope, he’s consistent across all brands. Now I can’t take one male’s experience and apply it to every male everywhere. That’s unrealistic but it seems like that’s the case because I’m pretty sure my brother’s are the same way. Upon checking the sizing guides for multiple brands, men’s clothing is consistent across all brands.

I looked at both of the sizing charts for the brands. The Levi’s that didn’t fit were a size 28 which is equivilant to a size 6 and corresponds to a waist of 25 – 26 inches with hips being 36.25 – 37.25 inches. The brand of jeans I was trying on at Target was called Universal Thread. A size 2 (the size I ended up buying) corresponds to a 26.75 inch waist and a hip size of 36 inches. While I haven’t tried any other brands on recently, a look at a variety of brands sizing charts shows different measurements for different sizing. Why is the size so different for fairly close measurements in the waist and hip?

Women’s clothing brands are so inconsistent with sizing. It’s not okay. Luckily, I’m comfortable enough in my own skin that being a size 2 in one brand and a size 8 in another isn’t that big of a deal. But what if I wasn’t comfortable enough for that? What if I was someone who put their self worth on the size of clothing I wear? If I’m a size 2 then I’m pretty or skinny or whatever the adjective may be that I would chose to call myself. Even if I had a pair of size 0 and thought I was good enough but then in another brand had to go up multiple sizes, that could really hurt someone who is struggling. Women shouldn’t have to go into a store and try on 10 pairs of pants just to find what fits.

A size 4 should be a size 4 across all brands. I get maybe going one size up or down depending on the style. But 3 sizes smaller?  That’s not okay.  What high up executive decided that a size 2 for Target is the same as a 28 in Levi’s? Apparently someone who doesn’t care about what the constant changing and inconsistent sizing can be taxing on the female brain. How come men’s clothing is the same across the board but women can’t get any consistency? It’s just plain stupid.

Maybe I’m ridiculous in thinking that brands need to all conform to one way of sizing. But in today’s diet culture and the social media comparison trap, clothing companies shouldn’t be playing into that. Clearly this is something that really bothered me the other day haha and hopefully I’m not the only one who has noticed and finds it a little ridiculous.

Question of the day: Do you agree with me on this about female clothing brands and their sizing?

    1. It’s ridiculous! Why can’t we get a little consistency considering it’s 2018? I really don’t care about the sizes until I want to buy a new pair of clothing from a certain brand and need the size. I just think it could be harmful to anyone who has struggled with body image.

  1. Ohhhhhh I totally agree with you– so annoying! I hate pants shopping for this reason! AND I also think sizes have changed over the years too.

    1. I’m glad to hear you agree Julie! It’s crazy because people are all about ending the stigma around eating disorders but clothing companies can play into it with the random sizing that exists.

  2. I agree with this so much. There are whole brands (LOFT I’M LOOKING AT YOU) that don’t make any sizes small enough for me- and I am not that teeny! Then other brands (AHEM AMERICAN EAGLE) where I’ve bought the same jeans I’ve been wearing a season or two later and found that they’re way too small. The size charts are totally inaccurate for most brands, and I’ve basically given up wearing anything but Gap jeans and Uniqulo jeggings!!

    1. It’s insane! I can totally get going a size up or down based on the style to (skinny vs. boyfriend or whatever) but to be so all over the board is nuts. Now I need to find my new go to jeans so if you have suggestions help a girl out Kerri!

  3. YES! I completely agree! I usually find one brand I like and stick to it because it’s so frustrating to not know what your size is in other brands. Not to mention it’s a huge blow to my self esteem having to go up a size….you’re not alone Maureen!

    1. It’s so annoying! Now I’m on the hunt to find my new go to brand for jeans. I don’t put any worth on the size of clothing I have but I know some people do. It would be horrible to be in that position. There needs to be a change in women’s clothing sizes!

  4. Bravo to this post! It’s SO ridiculous that sizes are inconsistent this way. Way too many times have I been reluctant to buy pants online because I don’t know whether they will fit or not! Ugh!

  5. STORY OF MY LIFE. I’ve never understood why sizes aren’t consistent. Like, aren’t measurements consistent? 34″ is 34″ right? It’s so frustrating, and can be very disheartening for sure! My husband has noticed it a few times as well on his side of things, and he’s always like what in the world!

    1. It’s the worst!! I can’t see how there can be that much variability in 34″ aside from a few millimeters (which happens with anything in manufacturing). But a 34″ at Target shouldn’t be a 40″ for Levi’s. I’m not trying to bring in one of every size to try on pants. I want one size to confirm it fits and I like it.

  6. Womens sizing always drives me nuts, it makes it so hard to shop. They hubs never has to try on clothes, he knows his sizes and so far has been the same size in every brand he has tried. I actually ordered two pairs of Old Navy pants a few years ago – same size and style and one fit, while the other was way to small. I asked about it when I returned them and they said they have two manufacturers and there is variation in sizing with each manufacturer.

    1. It seriously does. Now I have to be in the right mood to shop which is crazy and takes the fun out of picking new clothes. Alex is the same way as your husband and it’s so frustrating. Are you kidding me with the Old Navy story? That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. How can the same size and style not fit at all?!

  7. Women’s sizing is crazy! I can be a 00 in one line and a six in another and you’re right- it is tough emotionally and mentally! When you add in patterns that haven’t changed sizing since the 50s, it gets even crazier!

  8. Agreed! This is one big reason people can almost never buy me clothes, and I can’t really get them online either. I have to go myself to the store and figure out just what actually fits, regardless of the size. And it’s so annoying. I’m not too worried about the size anymore – but I get that that is an issue for some, and this is not helping matters – but it’s still upsetting not knowing where you stand and making clothes shopping just THAT much more difficult.

    1. I totally get what you mean Lauren! Once I find a brand that fits me well and I know my size in then I can go online. But until that happens I’m shopping around like a crazy person lol.

  9. I just sat here and nodded my head to this whole post, haha. I literally can’t buy jeans at some stores (like Express and Target) because the 0 is too big. Then I go to Banana Republic and I’m a normal “me” size 2. Like what is it with clothing companies?! Crazy!

    1. Haha I’m seriously so glad I’m not the only one this happens to! It’s absolutely ridiculous to me that I can’t just go and grab a size 6 or whatever size I actually am at every store and know it’ll fit me.

  10. THIS!!! Part of it I think depends on where the clothing is made. Girls may be more petite there! I once bought two pairs of jeans from Old Navy- same size and style and one of them fit totally different! Sizes are so relative- that’s why I’m all about one size fits all 🙂

    1. True but I mean come on. A 30″ waist is 30″ so just be consistent with that across all brands to make it easy on us. Wait Emily from Pizza & Pullups had the exact same thing happen at Old Navy!! Apparently the size varies based on the manufacturer. How crazy is that?! We just want some consistency!

  11. Preach, girl. I hate this, too!! I love jeans and have found this exists in every brand ever. I am a 27 in Joe’s and AG but a 29 in other brands. And when it comes to shirts, forget it! I’m short so I like to get petites, sometimes I’m a small, sometimes medium and sometimes XS. I hate trying on clothes and just wish I could go in and know my size. I’m with you! I hope this changes.

    1. It seriously makes me so happy to see all of the comments with other women experiencing the same thing. I get annoyed and I don’t place any value on the number on the tag. Which makes me think about all of the people who struggle with that and how it must be so hard to be a size 2 in one brand but an 8 in another 😦 There really needs to be a change!

  12. I totally agree with you! Women’s clothing sizes are honestly ridiculous. I wish they just went by general inches like men do instead of “sizes” because that makes it so much easier!
